Omg, omg, omg!

January 18, 2015 Clancy McKenna

Omg omg omg! I put a deposit on a motor home up in Branford, CT!

Kath saw this one, and sent the link to me.  A 26 foot Winnebago Aspect. It has 44,000 miles on it. For $39,500, exactly what the NADA ratings list as “Low retail, good price.”

I had to go see it. And almost as an afterthought, I put a check in my wallet before I went out the door. I was trying to connect this trip to CT with a visit to Rhiannon and Ram’s new home in Trumbull, but they were on Long Island visiting their families on the 28th.  I decided that I needed to go see this machine anyway, and then drove on up to Ed and Richard’s afterwards. I am so glad I did!

I fell in love with “Winnie” as soon as I drove her on  I-95. She handles like a charm, and is immaculate, as the ad had said. Chuck and Nancy have taken very good care of her.

Once I upsized the dream from a Class B (camper-van) to a larger Class C RV, I had a vision of a motor home in my mind that would sleep six. I looked at some 23’ and 25’ units with the cab-over bed, and thought that was what I needed. But this Aspect, sleeps only four, (and even that’s a bit of a stretch, when you consider that one bed is a full size, and the other is a twin, plus seven inches).

But mostly, I’ll be traveling alone. The other beds are just for when the kids or friends join me for a bit on my trip.  The living space truly is what I needed to be thinking about. My living space.  And when the kids join me, there is plenty of floor space for pads and sleeping bags.

My reading chair

There is a lounge chair just inside the RV door, a swivel rocker. A place to sit down and take my boots off, or to read a book on a rainy day. Truly, I value that chair over and above another bed to carry around, for the family that is mostly going to be back at home in New York while I travel.

26 x 10= 260 square feet? Can that be right?  I’ll be going from 620 to 260? Inversions are funny.

I arrived in Branford Connecticut, and met Chuck at the RV parked in front of his house. He gave me the tour, showed me some of his favorite features, a little bit of how things worked, and then I took her for a test drive. First, I drove around the neighborhood, which is hilly, curvy, small roads. Then, I took her out onto the highway. Initially, I admit that I was a little apprehensive, but she drove like a dream—like my dream.

When we returned to Chuck’s place, we had tea and I wrote a small check as a deposit. Chuck was OK with keeping the RV insured and in storage for a little while, until I could get back over there with a mechanic to do an inspection. We had a handshake to seal the deal.

I guess I was still in shock—48 hours later, and I still couldn’t sit still--couldn't quite process the idea. I didn’t have to search any more links from RVT, the search was over!

I had a fast visit with my brothers, because the idea of a third quiet day, writing and working at their house, popped like a balloon meeting a pin. I have so much to do! I needed to get back on the road, towards home—to seriously start organizing! Omg, omg, omg! I put a deposit on MY RV!
