Georgia O'Keefe in Hawaii

October 16, 2018 Clancy McKenna

Actually, I’ve been thinking of this show all summer as Georgia O’Keefe in the Bronx. I tried to go see it in the early spring with my dear friend Bette, but we couldn’t find a date that worked, so we agreed to wait until the fall and some cooler weather to go visit the Botanical Gardens.

We began our tour in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, as that becomes quite crowded later in the day. The tropical flowers are totally gorgeous, and there were some poems placed throughout.. I will link to them at the bottom of the post.

The early morning sunlight was an added bonus!

The paintings were hung in the library, but I was happy to visit these tropical beauties first.

We agreed that the Bird of Paradise is an amazing work of nature.

This little flower had fallen from vines above. O’Keefe couldn’t have created a more beautiful arrangement.

We made our way over to the library to view the paintings.

“In 1939, the artist accepted a nine-week, on-site commission from the Hawaiian Pineapple Company (Dole) to create two paintings for a new advertising campaign. She ultimately produced over 20 paintings of mountain ranges and waterfalls, not to mention enlarged studies of exotic plant life across Hawaii, Kauai, Maui, and Oahu.” (Excerpted from the NYBG show brochure)

This one was my favorite. It reminded me of a beach I visited in Iceland.

Here is a photograph of the artist in front of the arch.
